Q:  How do I know what "empty stomach" means?

A:  Since the body takes about 3 hours to empty the stomach, we use that to gauge the amount of time since last eating.  Remember not to eat for 3 hours after taking the gel caps as well.  With any diet you should try not to eat after dinner for best results but at least try to look at your normal bedtime and count down 3 hours before that time.
